Your Presence Matters
We carry them when they are babies. We hold their hands as they cross the street. We check their homework folders, practice spelling words, and celebrate every success, no matter how small. Then, almost without realizing it...boom. We let go. As children move through their educational journey, the expectation is that they become more independent. We stop checking their backpacks every night. We assume they'll remember assignments, manage their time, advocate for themselves, and navigate increasingly complex academic and social demands.
Independence is an essential goal of education. But independence is not something we simply expect—it is something we teach.
Too often, as students grow older, the support they receive decreases just as the challenges they face increase. Middle and high school students are expected to juggle multiple teachers, heavier workloads, extracurricular activities, friendships, family responsibilities, and the emotional complexities of adolescence. Yet these are the very years when many students still need consistent guidance, encouragement, and connection. The goal should never be to remove support. The goal should be to change the way we provide it. Just as scaffolding supports a building while it is being constructed, students need academic and emotional scaffolding as they develop the skills to become confident, capable, and independent learners.
The question isn't whether our students can learn to stand on their own. They can. The question is whether we're giving them the support they need while they are learning how.
